Humiliating rebuff for Blair initiative

Tony Blair's drive for Middle East peace talks has suffered an embarrassing setback at the hands of the US president, George Bush, only days after the prime minister flagged up his plan at the Labour party conference in Blackpool.
Mr Blair is pushing for a resumption of Israeli-Palestinian talks, backed by an international conference, before the end the year. He has told colleagues that, with war looming in Iraq, he regards it as essential to deal with one of the main causes of Arab resentment against the west.
But the Guardian has learnt that Mr Bush has blocked the initiative and has made it clear to Mr Blair that he does not want such talks to be held in the near future. "

Britain is to press for 'final status' negotiations on Israel and the Palestinian territories to be revived by the end of the year in an attempt to resolve the 54-year-old dispute, Tony Blair said yesterday.
Amid signs that Washington is ready to put pressure on Israel, the prime minister said Britain was prepared to play a leading role in the talks which should lead to the creation of a 'viable Palestinian state'. "

Israel has claimed its siege of Yasser Arafat’s compound is to prevent the Palestinians launching terrorist attacks in the run up to an American-led invasion of Iraq. But some think it is a conspiracy to derail the reforms demanded by America and others before granting a Palestinian state. Whatever the reason, the death toll is rising"

By Ha'aretz Service and agencies
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Monday that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had vowed that he was still 'committed' to the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel as part of a peace deal to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Speaking en route to a NATO foreign ministers' meeting in Iceland, Powell said that he had spoken to Sharon earlier in the day and the prime minister 'reaffirmed to me that he remains committed to moving forward to achieve that vision that I think most people have of a Palestinian state.' "

Ariel Sharon's worst nightmare came to life in a Tel Aviv auditorium last night when the Israeli prime minister was outflanked by the rightwing of his Likud Party, losing a crucial vote to a powerful challenger, Binyamin Netanyahu.
After hours of rancorous debate, the central committee of the Likud party voted overwhelmingly to reject forever a Palestinian state 'west of the Jordan river', despite Mr Sharon's arguments that it would set it at loggerheads with Washington, which has made Palestinian statehood one of the main planks of it Middle East peace initiative.
